When we think of a sapphire ring we generally think of a deep blue colour. The word sapphire comes from the greek word for blue; sapphirus. The blue colour comes from inclusions of iron and titanium and this can span over many different shades like cornflower blue from India, metallic blue from Montana, USA to dark blue and almost black from Nigeria. But did you know sapphire gemstones can be found in a wide range of colours? From yellow sapphire to pink sapphire and even lilac sapphire to only mention a few, you’re bound to find one to suit you!

Sapphire gemstones are known to be tough making them perfect for engagement rings and only second to Diamonds in terms of hardness. They are also the birthstone for September babies!

Throughout history sapphires were seen as the gem of the soul and as a connection to the spirit realm. Even Kings adorned sapphires, believing it protected them from being harmed. Pretty cool, right?

In modern times sapphire engagement rings were made famous by the Royal Family, when Prince Charles proposed to Lady Diana Spencer with a stunning oval sapphire and diamond engagement ring which was later given to Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge by Prince William. The gorgeous ring consists of 14 solitaire diamonds surrounding a 12-carat oval blue Ceylon sapphire, set in 18ct white gold. It was created by the jeweller Garrard and cost £28,000 in 1981.

Another famous royal sapphire engagement ring is Princess Eugenie’s engagement ring, given to her by Jack Brooksbank. This stunning and unique engagement ring is commonly mistaken for a pink diamond but it is in fact a Padparadscha Sapphire. A rare and beautiful gemstone with pinkish, peachy and orange tones.
